Picasa has those *.pal files, which hold some XML about the albums and pictures, see below for an example. [2] also gives the former filename for Windows: picasa.ini. A description of Picasa .ini file format can be found in [3] for Picasa 3.8.0. A similar bug report exists for Shotwell [4]. PicFace is an open source program which write Picasa information inside picture files [5].
