(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***) Package: konqueror Version: 1.9.3b (KDE 1.92 Beta >= 20000720) Severity: wishlist Hi! When opening an embedded application (kwrite kword kspread ...) it has the same look as the original application. when trying to modify the content nothing happens - I think an appropriate message (that the app is opened read only) would be helpful. cu ferdinand

Like a dialog box every time you press a key or move the mouse in a way that would modify the document ? Even if only once per document this would still be quite annoying. I agree about the need for something though. Maybe [read-only] in the titlebar ? (like koffice has [modified]) ? -- David FAURE david@mandrakesoft.com faure@kde.org http://home.clara.net/faure/ http://www.konqueror.org/ KDE Making The Future of Computing Available Today See http://www.kde.org/kde1-and-kde2.html for how to set up KDE 2
Hi! it would be nice to have read only in the titlebar when for various reasons the document can't be changed -- (KDE 2 on SuSE 6.4 source: cvsup max 24 hours old from host=ferret.lmh.ox.ac.uk daily rebuild) mit freundlichen GrüÃen / with best regards Ferdinand Gassauer PS. KDE 3.2.3 opens kword by default and does not preview the file. Only if you rmb->Preview in kword an embedded view is opened. IMHO this is obvious enough, but others might object.
*After a left mouse button click: documents that are meant for editing (as *.txt or *.kwd) get opened in the specific application in a new window, while files that are mostly for viewing (as *.ps, *.pdf *.jpeg) are opened in a embedded preview. *If you want to open a *.txt or *.kwd or some other file meant for editing within the browser in preview you need to make a right mosue click and select in the context menu "prewiev with <application>" so indicats that this is the read only mode. *At the moment (KDE 3.3.2a) if you preview a document in konqueror only those tool icons of that app that are for reading (as zoom, printing etc.) are shown in the tool bar (and they replace some of the konqueror icons). So the Bug ist mostly gone. But there are some small points with KDE 3.3.2a: a) the cut-copy-paste icons are always shown (and I'm quite sure) that they are the Konqueror icons (and not from the app, as some apps don't have that specific icons in that order). As I read on the kde-dot they are gone in the next KDE release in Konqueror. b) The cut and paste icons get greyed out but not always (so there are some small points left). Make for example a preview with context menu of a *.txt file look at the icons press back icon and then the forward icon. Now some oft the (edit) icons are greyed out that weren't before. c) The cursor is shown so people might think that they can edit and wonder why it is not possible. So the cursor needs to be disabled. d) some of the menu points (as cut) need also to be greyed out. So I'd suggest that some carefull cleanup of functions (if they are possible at the moment or not) is better for preview mode as a further [read only] notice. If the functions arent reachable people will not think they can edit. There is another point which needs to be distinguished: If for example a file meant for editing has only read-only rights (for the user opening it) then there should be a specific notice within this app (eg. kate) that this file is read only. But his is another bug and not konqueror related... So I would suggest if those points I pointed out are gone with KDE 3.4 this bug should be closed.
As far as I can test a), b) and d) are fixed in KDE 3.4. Maybe c) and d) need to be addressed in a GUI guidelines, after all Konqueror/khtml can't change how a KPart reacts. Could be something for Aaron J. Seigo (aseigo) and his KDE HIG team.
does this whis still valid in konq 4.2.4?
