Description Nathaniel Taylor 2004-02-20 10:31:24 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.0)
Installed from: Compiled From Sources
Compiler: gcc 3.3.2
OS: Linux

Situation: if new messages come to the local inbox or an imap inbox, even when that inbox is currently displayed in the message list pane, the message list does not scroll up to show the new message details.

Reproduce: look at an inbox which has got enough messages already in it that there is no blank space in the message list pane (and therefore a scrollbar is showing). Recieve new messages by auto or manual check. Note that it is necessary to scroll to see the sender, subject etc. of the new messages.

Expected behaviour:

when both conditions of
       i) new mail comes to a folder that is currently shown in the message list pane
ii) the message list was originally scrolled to show the most recent email
are fulfilled, then new messages should cause the list should scroll to _stay_ at the most recent, i.e. to show the new messages. I think this would please almost all users; note that it doesn't mean that a message being viewed in the preview pane would change to a new one, but just that the new one's details would be visible.

It might be annoying to some if kmail hopped to another mail-folder from a one currently being read just because it had picked up a new message. It might even be annoying if it scrolled right up the message list for the same reason. That is why I don't suggest it should _always_ focus on new messages.
It would however be nice to be able to decide that this _should_ happen, as another config option.
Likewise, it would be a good _non-default_ option that the focus (the previewed message) should switch to the newest message when new ones arrive. This would complete the perfection for those who see the screen from a distance but can't immediately get up to read the message -- feeding the baby, perhaps.

Tackat recently reminded me of this one and a short discussion with the usability folks who happend to be present showed that KMail might indeed be unintuitive here. I'll try to look into this.

I have exactly the same problem.

It disturbed me a lot while begining to use KMail.
I got a "New mail" notification, but no mail appeared.
It's because my messages list is big and KMail doesn't scroll to the new messages.

I have most recent mails on top.

I vote for the bug.

I've checked this with KMail from KDE SVN r881890 (to be in KDE 4.2), which has a new messages list view from GSoC. When my view is scrolled to top and new messages arrive the view still isn't kept scrolled to top to view the newest messages.
