Description Burkhard Neinhues 2004-01-23 11:33:18 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.0)
Installed from: Compiled From Sources
Compiler: gcc SUSE 9.0
OS: Linux

SMTP does not work, error "failed to send (some) queued messages"
with KDE kmail, KDE 3.2 RC1.
Sending over SMTP with mozilla does work.

This is most likely a duplicate of bug 73241. Check that you've entered an email address in your identity configuration.
Comment 2 sascha zucca 2004-01-23 13:47:15 UTC
hi. had the same problem...
in kmail go to "configure kmail" and then to "network"
in the smtp folder make sure you selected "quoted printable" under mail-attributes.

That worked for me.
bye sascha

Hello,

Ok, there was a valid email address. I removed my identity and generated a
new one. Now it works! However, the identity dialog clearly showed an email
address.

kmail 3.2.0
kde 3.2.0
compiled from masked gentoo package for athlon-xp

When I try to send mail over smtp it says in the status bar "failed to send (some) queued messages".

I've got an email address in my identity, also I've tried deleting the identity and creating a new one. Further I've adapted almost any mail sending relating options I could find.

When sniffing to catch the actual smtp data I noticed that there was NO network traffic what so ever when checking email.

Of course I consider this as a serious bug ;-(

If any specific information is needed pls mail me.

After rebooting I suddenly could send mail. So probarbly this bug was caused to some issues with my identity.

Maybe its wise to output a more verbose error message?

Comment 6 Chris Gilbreth 2004-03-13 18:07:44 UTC
I managed to send mail after I had modified and renamed the default identity, rebooted, and re-created my test message. However I'm not sure if re-creating the test message after I modified the default identity would have allowed it to be sent -- I only thought to do it after I had rebooted.
Comment 7 Cevven 2004-04-07 15:03:44 UTC
I had the same problem.

smtp worked once I created a new identity with an email address, set it as default, restarted kmail, created a new message (messages created before the restart failed to send).

I'm running KMail 1.6.1 using KDE 3.2.1 on Debian Sid.

gzipped strace -f kmail

The strace.gz is a gzipped text file created by the following statement:

strace -f kmail 2> strace

and is also downloadable at

Comment 9 simon.guest 2004-05-04 18:36:59 UTC
I had this problem, now fixed, as follows.

Once you've fixed your identity (i.e. setting an email address), try deleting all queued mail in the outbox. It seems that previously queued mail stops later mail from going, but once I deleted the old stuff, it all sprang into life.

cheers,
Simon
Comment 10 Johannes Boneschanscher 2004-05-06 15:52:26 UTC
Yeah that works for me! (Clearring all mail in the outbox folder)

Thanx!
Comment 11 Chris Perry 2004-05-26 10:06:19 UTC
Once bitten, twice ... bitten again. This is at least the second time that the "mail in the outbox keeps changes from taking place" bug has bitten me. At very least, KMail ought to raise an alert when you change your settings that they won't take place until the outbox is emptied. Thanks simon et al.,

This should be embarrassing! How in the world did this make it out the door? I have tried all the above, and it still won't send. And so reason given either. Nuts!
Comment 13 Thomas R 2004-06-24 04:50:18 UTC
I have noticed that if I leave all the account information the same (i.e., default user and server settings etc), but start kmail from a root login, I can send just fine. With my user login (non-root), I fail to send all the time and I crash frequently.
Comment 14 David Denny 2004-07-26 09:13:03 UTC
In my case the hint about creating a new Id and killing the default one cured the problem.

Been round a few blocks before that one kicked in... thanks anyway

i've created a new identify, and it still does not work.
Comment 16 james 2004-08-15 07:25:22 UTC
does not work with kmail 1.6.2, kde 3.3, and debian testing/unstable. i have a proper id.
Comment 17 Dave Moore 2004-09-23 07:39:21 UTC
This seems to be the same problem as bug 80706. I had this same problem in kmail 1.6.1 in Mandrake 10.0 Official. A google search found a someone who tried the following which worked for me: (1) In Settings-Configure Kmail add an outgoing account & choose Sendmail when given the choice between SMTP & Sendmail, then accept the defaults; (2) Move the new Sendmail outgoing account up into the Default position & click OK back out of Settings; (3) then Click File & Send Queued Messages (you will get an error message); (4) now delete the messages in your Outbox; (5) Go back into Configure Kmail & move your original outgoing account back up into the Default position (you can Remove the Sendmail outgoing account); & (6) Click OK out of Settings. You should now be able to send mail again. Obviously more steps than the other suggestions, but if they don't work, this should.

This should not happen anymore with KMail 1.7. If there are no objections I would like to close this report.

No objections.
