Version: (using KDE KDE 3.1.1) Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages Compiler: gcc version 3.2.3 20030415 (Debian prerelease) Configured with: ../src/configure -v --enable-languages=c,c++,java,f77,objc,ada --prefix=/usr --mandir=/usr/share/man --infodir=/usr/share/info --with-gxx-include-dir=/usr/include/c++/3.2 --enable-shared --with-system-zlib --enable-nls --without-included-gettext --enable-__cxa_atexit --enable-clocale=gnu --enable-java-gc=boehm --enable-objc-gc i386-linux OS: Linux While kscd is open or the tray applet is activated kscd hammers my logs with this: Apr 17 23:23:43 localhost kernel: sr0: CDROM not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive. Apr 17 23:24:14 localhost last message repeated 62 times Apr 17 23:25:15 localhost last message repeated 122 times Apr 17 23:26:16 localhost last message repeated 122 times Apr 17 23:27:17 localhost last message repeated 122 times .... This is a pretty bad way to check for a cd.. So I wonder what's wrong. Someone on #debian-kde suggested playing with the ln's on sr0 and scd0 but that breaks some apps if I delink one.
I have the same problem here with kscd 1.3.3 (KDE 3.1.5) on my Gentoo box. When I searched the Gentoo support forum, I found out that many other users find this behaviour pretty annoying :( These are the log messages when no CD is inserted: Jun 6 10:38:04 ares sr1: CDROM not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive. When I open the drive: Jun 6 10:38:08 ares sr1: CDROM not ready yet. Then: Jun 6 10:38:12 ares sr1: CDROM not ready yet. And finally: Jun 6 10:38:16 ares sr1: CDROM (ioctl) reports ILLEGAL_REQUEST. Although kscd works without problems, it stuffs my /var/log/messages like crazy, because it generates such an error message every second :( Some notes about my system: kscd 1.3.3 KDE 3.1.5 Kernel 2.4.24-xfs-r3 ide-scsi enabled for boths DVD drives on secondary ide kscd listens on /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/cd "Autoplay" in kscd is disabled And finally: When I kill kscd, the error messages disappear...
It's a error, or better to say, a feature of sr_mod module. Only this module generates this message, and only if cgc->quiet is 0. Please report it to linux kernel developers.

Is this bug still present in a recent version of KDE, such as 3.5.8 or 4.0.1?
I can confirm this still in KDE 4.1 as part of kdemultimedia-4.1.0-1.fc9.i386.
