Description Werner Backes 2002-10-13 16:11:45 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.0.3)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
Compiler: gcc, v3.2
OS: LinuxLinux

i'm using xfree 4.2.1, gentoo linux 1.4rc1 with gcc 3.2
i'm using a multihead configuration with a geforce 2mx (agp) with
the closed source nvidia driver and an ati all in wonder
(pci - rage 128) with the gatos driver.
hotkeys won't work on the second head, if i turn xinerama off.
they work perfectly if xinerama is turned on.

it seems to be a general multihead problem (xinerama off):
i'm using the cursor keys with control to change workplaces.
using control-right on the second head, moves a workplace down.
for the first head it works correctly.

I cannot reproduce this with KDE 3.1.0. Can you? I am using NVidia GeForce4 with NVidia
drivers. XFree86 4.2.0

I can reproduce this error also with kde 3.1.0. I think you cannot
reproduce this with a single geforce4 card since this uses it's twinview
extension and it's treated as one screen also if you turn xinerama off.
You should be able to move a window from one screen to the other.
I have two graphics cards (geforce2 agp and ATI pci). I think that makes
the difference. To change virtual screens I use SHIFT+CTRL+Arrow keys.
This works perfectly for the first screen, but fails in strange way for
the second screen (using SHIFT+CTRL+Left leads to one virtual screen down)

I think this is a kde erros since xev identifies the keys correctly.

I'm not using twinview. I'm using a separately configured Xinerama style
setup.

Just to be clear, are you using Xinerama or not?

I'm not using Xinerama, since I want to use the XV extension of my second
card to watch TV (The GATOS drivers implement the acces to the TV tuner
this way)
If you are using a geforce card only with 2 monitors you are automaticly
using twinview. Twinview provides a Xinerama extension.
I'm interpreting the docs this way ...

Ok now this makes more sense. This bug was assigned under Xinerama instead
of under dualhead. Anyhow, according to Mark V. at NVidia twinview behaves
differently than Xinerama with the GF4, but this is irrelevant anyways.

What is at issue is hotkeys not working for dual head. I'll have to ask
someone else to look at this as I don't use dual head in non-Xinerama mode.

If I understand this all correctly, this seems to be only a problem with reading the configuration
file specifying the shortcuts.

No. I'm using a dual head configuration with two graphic cards.
I turned xinerama off. I have two displays :0.0 and :0.1
If the mouse focus is on the first display (:0.0) the hotkeys work as
they should, but with focus on the second (:0.1) they won't work ...

I tried xev on both display and X recognises the keys correctly.

I hope this will help you. Feel free to ask more.

Works for me with Xnest and KDE3.2beta1.

Can you still reproduce this problem with KDE3.4?

The PC with the 2 graphics cards is at my parents house. I will be there
in august. I will install KDE 3.4 and check for the bug.

This bug still occurs with KDE 3.4 on my system with a single ATI
Radeon 9600 dual-head, without xinerama.

Comment 14 Bryce Allen 2007-08-12 17:55:48 UTC
I have KDE 3.5.7 with nvidia binary drivers, and the bug is still present.

If I use TwinView with one screen spanning both monitors, hotkeys work on both monitors. However if I use a two screen setup it only works on one. I have not figured out how to control which screen gets hotkeys - this would be just as good as a total fix for me, as I only need hotkeys on my main monitor.

It seems that this a problem whenever there is more than one screen. The dual screen config with one card seems to behave just like having two separate cards in many ways.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
Comment 15 Bryce Allen 2007-10-23 18:42:47 UTC
I no longer have this problem in Kubuntu Gutsy. Possible causes for the fix: update to KDE 3.5.8, updated xorg (input or xserver), or updated nvidia drivers.

I just hope it stays fixed. Separate screen behave much better with XV, 3d graphics and fullscreened games.

Does this bug still occur for the other reporters on KDE 3.5.8?
Comment 17 George Goldberg 2008-01-07 05:06:22 UTC
Closing this bug since it works for some people, and no response by others. Please reopen this bug if it can still be reproduced in a recent version of KDE such as 3.5.8 or 4.0.0
