A message without attachment removes the whole MIME Tree widget (which makes a inconvenient flickering due to the large part of the kmail UI which is rebuilt) (Submitted via bugs.kde.org)

Don't know which patch is being talked of, but the bug is still there: Setting appearance/layout/"show mime tree" to "always" acts like "smart". The Mime-Tree will only be displayed if there are attachments. (CVS HEAD from yesterday, 2003/1/8)
