Description Jonathan Riddell 2015-10-05 18:02:01 UTC
The tooltips from the plasma panel task bar have a habit of showing up once the mouse has left the task bar and I want to focus on something else. They hang around for several seconds which often gets in the way of work.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. move mouse over taskbar
2. move away quickly
3. tool tip appears and stays for a few seconds covering my important work

Same here, see bug 353592

I can reproduce this pretty reliably:

1. With a non-minimized window, click the taskbar entry to minimize it (do this before the tooltip appears).
2. click it again to restore it.
3. move the mouse to the window's titlebar, and drag the window.

Another way that also works most of the time (even after restarting plasmashell):

1. click the Application Launcher icon to show it.
2. click somewhere else to hide it.

The tooltip of the first task will appear.

The same bug also affects system tray items and other plasma widgets. It's a bit harder to reproduce than the task bar, and it doesn't happen all the time, but it's similar:

1. Move the mouse to a tray icon, but move it away before the tooltip can show.
2. Click inside a window.

I have two monitors, and maximized chrome windows on both. This randomly keeps happening because I accidentaly move the mouse over the tray on the left monitor before I click inside the browser (gmail hangouts in the lower right, very close to the tray). Later I click inside the browser on the right side (sometimes the popup appears only after that click). I move the mouse too fast for the popup to appear, so it triggers the bug.

So it looks like the bug is in plasma, not the task manager.

Another, different way to reproduce:

If you set the panel to autohide, move the mouse to it to unhide it (and move it over a plasma widget, I tried with the application launcher in the lower left corner), but then quickly move it away before the tooltip can appear, the tooltip will sometimes appear and stay there for a long time. The interesting thing is that when the tooltip appears, the mouse is not over the widget any more, so it looks like the timeout that triggers the tooltip is not getting cancelled correctly, or it's getting triggered incorrectly, possibly when the plasma panel loses focus (you click on another window or it autohides).

Can you guys please retry with 5.6 beta or later? Many, many changes were done to tooltips in this release.
