Description Torrie Fischer 2012-08-21 15:21:55 UTC
The new KDE Edu website is absolutely fantastic, but it lacks any direction on how to install a piece of software. The link on KAlgebra's page points to kde-apps.org, which contains a broken download link.

Some very lengthy and heated discussion in IRC led us to realize that there is no way for a user who is totally new to Linux to figure out how to install kalgebra without already having knowledge of their distro's package manger.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Google for 'kalgebra'
2. Try to install it, without opening the package manager yourself
Actual Results:
Frustration

Expected Results:
Something somewhere tells the user to check their package manger, or a link automatically opens up KAlgebra in the package manager.

User had been using Fedora for approximately 3 weeks, and was looking to install KAlgebra to help out with kde-edu.

Hey Trever!
First of all ,thank you for your feedback .Since you are new to Kbuntu first of all you need to build kalgebra or which ever edu app like pairs you want to try first .Now to build it you have to check out the repo and the branch after that in your konsole build it .Now for that you can use make && sudo make install .Also do check out if you are the root user .
Cheers!

I'm not on Kubuntu, nor am I new to linux at all.

I'm not sure what your comment has to do with the edu website at all, actually.

the edu site provides app pages with some general info about an app and links for further information. pretty much like that mainsite of kde (currently). Those pages are served through plain json files.
So it should be pretty simple for app maintainers to check them out and update accordingly, though it might indeed be an overhead of work.
As for a more global way of informing about how to compile/update/install kde edu apps themselves i propose a simple wiki page, maybe specialized for edu. that way it can easily be updated. And lastly, just adding that link to the json files.

This is not a website issue, this is a documentation issue. I recommend to close this issue and talk to kde-edu mailing list to see if they can help and create a link to this.

Reassigning, should be moved to mailing list
Comment 8 Aleix Pol 2015-02-02 14:42:32 UTC
Adding Andreas. He has been working on a new infrastructure for the KDE Edu website (for now) so we can better document these things.
