Ah, important part: window is closed by Ctrl+W or Chat->Close menu.
so, summarize steps to reproduce hangup: launch kopete, when main window appears - open some chat. then, close the main window, then Ctrl+W in chat window.
I have totally the same behaviour. The bug is fully reproducible here.
I had the same (or similar) issue with kopete hanging in message-indicator and resolved it this way: In kopete: go to SETTINGS > CONFIGURE > BEHAVIOR > check "show system tray icon" Kopete version: 1.0.80 KDE version: 4.6.2 on 64bit Kubuntu 11.04
