Description Weng Xuetian 2011-05-08 06:45:04 UTC
Version: unspecified (using Devel)
OS: Linux

I'm sorry but there isn't option for KDE 4.6.3 yet, so I just choosed recent svn one.
Just upgrade to 4.6.3, seems that some icon already changed? But it's not for all size of icon. Some bigger size ones are changed, some small size ones is still old .
Actually I already test 4.7 snapshot, and know it will be introduced in 4.7, but I don't think this is should be introduced in a minor upgrade, and even the icon change isn't complete yet.
Another problem is that seems many people don't like the style of new icon (including me), the new icon is too tangish like gnome/tango, Actually I don't mind color that much (but still it's similar with fedora default one), but should the border of icon use strong color to lose the old style?

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Open dolphin and resize the icon size

Actual Results:
should keep all icon in same style

Expected Results:
some icon already in new style
Comment 1 Ukyoi 2011-05-08 09:25:37 UTC
Can't agree more.

In my opinion, the icons of KDE4 seemed like a kind of material between metal and glass, smoothly and half-transparent. But new folder icon looks stubborn and lack of luster.

I really wish it can be changed when KDE 4.7 release, or just return to the old one.
Comment 2 tony 2011-05-08 11:56:38 UTC
Yeah, even if i don't like the new look of folder icons at all, at least we should have a consistent look across sizes.
This is not a change i expected from a minor release.
Comment 3 Christoph Feck 2011-05-08 12:09:46 UTC
Your distribution should ship the version of Oxygen icons that is tagged for usage with KDE 4.6. Just shipping latest trunk will obviously show you "work in progress".

Maybe you should open the oxygen-icons tarball for KDE 4.6.3.
Comment 5 Christoph Feck 2011-05-08 12:26:56 UTC
If the tarballs have the incorrect contents, please report that to the release team. For more information, see http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/Release_Team

Unfortunately, the release team has no entry in bug tracker.

I don't think it is due to some distros. This bug exists on (at least) openSUSE, Arch,...
I know you're planning to introduce those ugly gnome2-ish "oxygen" icons in KDE 4.7, but they should not exist on any KDE 4.6.x.
Comment 8 pinheiro 2011-05-08 18:01:51 UTC
IN trunk oxygen the only missing size is 16x16 if you get trunk oxygen it should be barly notecebale.. I should finish it mostly today.... Solution bug your distro to use the old oxygen icon pacage or if they want to use trunk the one from later today....
As for ugly/pretty well its the artist perrogative, we like this one better, plus its a good example of group work, aka it was not nuno doing it all this time, and that makes me very hapy.

I could expect many KDE users don't like gnome-ish design just because it's gnome-ish. Actually my opinion is, in spite of its gnome-ish style, it looks well, but it isn't quite fit in all oxygen icon set.

You can check this http://flic.kr/p/9FDDRF, actually I think it will looks better in this size (just because of resize), no so string color in border, which is same as other icon in oxygen. Maybe some little adjust can make it easily accepted by other user? It's just my opinion though.
Comment 10 pinheiro 2011-05-08 18:50:35 UTC
this icon is mostly seen alongside the new mimetypes and its looks much better than the old one, and fits realy well, ok its difrent form the old one, but its does fit oxygen realy well at least 4.6+ oxygen icons...
Oxygen keeps on evolving, thats one of the resons it still fresh after all this years and hopfuly fresh for all the 4.x series. for 5.x somthing new should be created... but thats another story :D
Comment 11 Simonas 2011-05-08 19:27:03 UTC
I agree with pinheiro. At first i didnt like this new icon either, but more i see it more i like it. In fact, mimes with this new icon matches perfectly. And oxygen is not just eyecandy, just take a look at oxygen widget theme, i definitely wouldnt call it eyecandy, it has a sharp and solid look. So i guess as of now the new icon matches the whole oxygen experience. The fact that its not shiny doesnt mean it doesnt match oxygen experience.

Is there such thing as "tagged for usage with KDE 4.6" vs "trunk" in oxygen icons?
Comment 13 Dmitry Roshchin 2011-05-08 22:41:48 UTC
KDE 4.6.3 is only bugfix release, including new icons contradict release rules.

New icons really ugly and looks alien in oxygen icons set. If someone prefer new icons, just create new icon set "gnoxygen" and use it.
Comment 14 pinheiro 2011-05-09 00:30:03 UTC
The set is now mostly finished in trunk, I invite every one to try it.
Comment 15 Ukyoi 2011-05-09 07:02:46 UTC
I personally don't agree the feeling of uncoordinated is just caused by not smooth enough. I use KDevelop, Akregator and of course the "K" button and really don't think the new folder icon fits with them. As I said, luster like glass (or just brighter color?) is pretty important. In this regard, KDevelop is really a good model. The straight line across the folder icon is OK, but maybe a little semi-transparent and brighter will make the icon more active?

I've checked the oxygen-icons tarball in the ftp. Those icons are already inconsistent. Can anyone reopen the bug? It's *definitely not RESOLVED*.
Comment 18 Christoph Feck 2011-05-11 20:50:01 UTC
The tarball was not created by the Oxygen team. See comment #5.

> It's *definitely not RESOLVED*.

Nuno spent several hours in the last nights to fix the remaining folder inconsistencies in trunk. Changing resolution accordingly.

icons?

Nicolás, there is no "kdesupport-for-4.6" tag list in svn, as we used to have for earlier versions, see http://websvn.kde.org/tags/

That might be a problem caused by the transition to git; either it is no longer possible to create such a tag list, or it has simply be forgotten.

I don't know who is/was responsible for the tags, all I know is that the Oxygen team never had to deal with that procedure :)

So do I.

I remember when you changed the default plasma theme from Oxygen to Air. I think it's a similar case. Although Air plasma theme continues evolving, changes are minor than the radical Oxygen->Air.

Maybe this change isn't *so* radical, but using another name for the default icon set seems to be reasonable.
Comment 20 Tomasz C. 2011-05-18 22:44:26 UTC
Previous icons are a lot better, I request that these icons placed in a separate theme so that everyone can choose.

+1. Old icons are awesome.
Comment 22 Leo 2011-06-06 10:41:27 UTC
The 4.6.3 icons are vomit. It is a terrible mix of styles. The new folder icons are just awful.

I've downgraded to 4.6.0 until there are better looking folder icons.

It's easy to downgrade the icons only to 4.6.2 while keeps other still 4.6.3.
Comment 24 pinheiro 2011-06-06 17:14:19 UTC
this problem (inconsistent icons) is solved in trunk and will be available in 4.6.4, for the people that like to use adjectives like "vomit" you can use the old icons, as trunk and oxygen goes I get to say what is Oxygen or not.
Not gona hast my and your time discussing this completly subjective maters, and i tend to trust my judgement better than most people....
Alot of people had similar feelings about this folder and now think its way better, wich matched my feeling about it and how it was gone be precived..
Comment 25 Leo 2011-06-06 17:28:33 UTC
Well you can't please everybody can you. There are also heaps of other people that don't like the radical departure from what was before. It would have been far better and consistent just name your icon set something else.

And if you read all what I wrote instead of what irked you most, I already downgraded to what I consider visually consistent and pleasing.

Apologies for denigrating your time that you have committed to this. Although, I still don't like.
Comment 26 pinheiro 2011-06-06 19:32:54 UTC
@leo sure no problem, and ofcourse i undrstand that you dont like it, I had a prety good idea that a good section of the user base would not like it..
But in this field its kinda impossible to make anything that everyone likes.
I just do what i think most people like, (think im not that bad at it).
Dough If i can advise one thing it is to give this new icon a good test, + one week and if you still dont like it well then revert to the old set...
Alot of people had the same reaction you did and, after a week of use, they say the new one is alof better and fits oxygen quite well... (imo the "its not oxygen" thing is mostly a projecttion of what people think oxygen is and not what it realy is this days,)
After the mimetype redo wich most people loved, the most requested change was the folders, and alot of people like the new ones alot, they do fit the new mimetypes way better, and i gess thats were the folders are mostly seen any way.

Cheers! and hoping you grow to love the new folders.

How can you say something like that about a man committing his time to KDE? I dislike new icon too, but this is very rude.
Comment 30 pinheiro 2011-06-08 21:44:01 UTC
@Ryan Johnson sory if i made you upset, but realy I do what i think its best for kde and Oxygen. Sometimes i make mistakes like any one else, it would not be the frist icon I would remove becouse people dont like it, even dough I realy like it, problem is that in this case alot of people like the new folder beter than the old one... and IMO it fits better with the new mimetipes...

On a personal note, I think you are taking this way to serusly, despise is somthing I only have for the worst things in life, like racism. I dont dispise any other living beeing.
Comment 31 munknex 2011-06-08 22:30:14 UTC
@pinheiro I agree that many people like new icon. But also a lot of people dislike it very much. And everyone like old one :) Maybe it would be better to keep it and try to create something more conservative?

I guess a big part of users will find new icon alien. I'm among them, and I'd like to have an easy way to return old icon without downgrading.

Anyway thank you for what you do. I really appreciate it, and I'm fond of icons you created before :)
Comment 32 pinheiro 2011-06-08 23:45:08 UTC
@munknex no, alot of people did not liked the old folder, after the mimetypes it was the mos requested change in oxygen.
As for the alien nature, it not... it just looks like it at frist sight.

I did alot of testing with it before puting it on svn, this reaction was expected... I also expected alot of people realy loving it... and that as been the case as well :). all things considered its worth the change.

I will give the icon the test it deserves. If it fails I take responsability
for the failiure. And put the old one in. I'm prety sure it wont fail, alot of people told me its great, its alos much more in tune with oxygen this days. we are not as glossy/saturated as we used to be.
Comment 33 fsanchez 2011-06-10 22:36:28 UTC
@Nuno:

If the new icon set isn't going to be renamed (something I respect totally), is there any way that for people who prefer the old icon set, make available through kde-artowork (or something like that) the old oxygen icon set?
Comment 34 pinheiro 2011-06-11 01:13:21 UTC
maybe some one can put them in kde-look if they are not there already....

If the new icon set will not be renamed, (such as "gnoxygen" as suggested by Dmitry :), I would like to call the old set "liquid oxygen", the most powerful and most widely used condensed phase of oxygen, with the light blue color--Just like the old oxygen icon sets.
Comment 37 pinheiro 2011-06-11 11:57:19 UTC
Its hardly a new icon-set giiii, it was the folders this time... Oxygen was never a static icon set, I think over the time I must have redone all of the icons...
Wen I changed the mime-types (a much bigger change) no one proposed that... think you guys are taking it way to seriously, more than I am... any way if the problem is just the folder witch is a relatively small set of icons the best action is to create a theme composed of just the folders and put it on kde-look. The way the theming engine works will use what ever icon you have on the theme and fall back to oxygen wen the theme does not have a icon... If one of you guys could do that it would be perfect, If not i guess I will have to do it :) but I'm way over worked as is, soooooo if one of you guys could make the compilation, make sure it works and put it on kde-look it would be fantastic. cheers
Comment 38 Weng Xuetian 2011-06-12 02:10:23 UTC
Actually I think the mime-type change is great, the whole style is evolving forward with that change, so nobody mentioned it...

If you put this icon set separate from oxygen, well, most people might not take it so seriously. When you put it with IN oxygen, there is great inconsistency though. (But actually I think the change in kwallet/trash is good this time) Just look at the folder and the mimetype icon in dolphin.... They seems come from different theme... Even just the dolphin icon's color is not consistent with the folder.

If whole icon set change into something we say "gnome-ish", it might be even more feasible than current state.

"Current icon comes from different theme", that's what I think.

And it's not fixed in 4.6.4 ..... Oh...
Comment 39 pinheiro 2011-06-12 02:48:27 UTC
"Actually I think the mime-type change is great, the whole style is evolving
forward with that change, so nobody mentioned it.."
Sory to disapoint you but alot of people did not liked the change as well :)

guess what some said???? "Its not oxygen" :)

See what I have to deal with? :) wen you have this many users nothing you do pleases every one, art/design is subjective.
Comment 40 Weng Xuetian 2011-06-12 04:31:07 UTC

There is still one icon on 4.6.4 that uses the old folder style, this is folder-html.

Also, I know this is a bug tracker and not a forum or something, but the last few comments made me want to shout out a huge THANK YOU to Nuno for making our desktops so beautiful for all these years :D Your work is so much appreciated.

And thanks for the patience.
Comment 44 Janík Tománek 2011-07-28 16:33:38 UTC
Using "Oxygen Old" solves the problem with ugly icons but is anybody going to merge new Oxygen things into "Oxygen Old" ? Probably not. I like Oxygen, I just cannot withstand the icons. They do NOT fit into KDE, they look ugly and different next to other icons like Bin of Network services.

Is there any other bug report for the ugly icons since this one is resolved and about someting else?

I like the Oxygen style and admire everybody's work, just these icons should be reworked.
