Jabberwocky

Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.4.4)
OS: Linux

Dolphin doesn't detect the file names encoding correctly. I noticed this only with audio CDs.

Reproducible: Always

@Thiago: is this related to that old "wontfix" bug regarding enconding or is this different?
Comment 2 Thiago Macieira 2010-08-02 15:17:44 UTC
This is related but slightly different. This is asking for detecting the encoding of filenames, which is simply not possible.

Local files have exactly one encoding and that is the locale's encoding. (And the only locale encoding accepted for the filesystem is UTF-8) So detecting the local filesystem's filename encoding is pointless: it's always UTF-8.

Now, remote filesystems, via KIO, can have different, remote encodings. There's a menu in Konqueror and, I believe, in Dolphin too, to select the remote encoding. It defaults to UTF-8.

Some KIOSlaves can detect and/or use Unicode for filenames, but some others need user help.

In time: audiocd shouldn't be one of these. Why is kio_audiocd *generating* non-UTF-8 filenames?
Comment 3 Frank Reininghaus 2010-09-26 00:34:49 UTC
I think we should reassign this to kio/audiocd then.

Hi. Is any progress here? This is terrible to run windows in vmware to perform simplest tasks.

Upgraded to 4.8.2 but still same results.
