Description Barry Strong 2010-06-06 16:00:15 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.4.2)
OS: Linux

If I right click on a file in dolphin or QuickAccess Browser and then click Properties Dolphin reacts differently depending on the size of the file ( in my case these where video files ).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Try to display properties of files of various sizes of about 1 to 2 GB.

Actual Results:
1. File size 348 MB, dolphin and QickAccess Browser displays the properties as
   expected.
2. File size 1.1GB, dolphin starts using all available memory and swap space.
If I am able to close dolphin or kill the process the memory is released.
Also if I try to display the properties with the QuickAccess Browser the
desktop stops responding, doing alt-ctrl-f1 switches to console mode but no
   login prompt is displayed.
3. File size 2.4QB, dolphin hangs for a while and then the properties are
displayed. If using the QuickAccess Browser the desktop stops responding for
a while and then the properties are displayed. After watching system
activities it appears that the entire file is being read before displaying
   the properties.

Expected Results:
Properties of the file should be displayed without any delay.

Using KDE SC 4.4.5 (and 4.4.4) I didn't experienced any problem (with both dolphin and quick access).

I've even tried with big video files (~8Gb) on a dual core and with an old laptop.

As stated in my bug report this problem does not happen on really large files. This only happens on files in the size range of about 1.0GB -> 2.5GB.

Don't worry: I've tried with a lot of files, from ~500Mb to 8Gb :-)

Would you like to try 4.4.5 just for being sure that my two setups are not "special" ?

Thanks :-)

Hmmm, Just tryed it again on my setup using dolphin, 1.5GB .mp4 file right
click on the file, click properties and dolphin starts eating memory, I killed
the Dolphin process witch doesn't die, goes into disksleep and continues to
eat memory. Only way to stop it is to logout and then login again.

I don't want really want to go to 4.4.5 would rather stay with distro's
version. I know what causes the problem and know how to avoid so will probably
wait unitil distro (kubuntu 10.4) upgrades KDE and then see if the problem
still exists.

Any way this could be a driver/hardware problem??

Thanks for looking into this...

@Peter: could this bug be related to nepomuk/strigi ?
