Description pi78geon 2010-04-04 18:39:14 UTC
Version:           1.3 (using KDE 4.3.5)
OS:                Linux
Installed from:    Mandriva RPMs

Hello,

I have a VFAT 500GB USB disk drive (Western Digital My Book), 83% full, with 373,8 GB used, 353 261 files, 20 045 directories. I use it to store videos and backups (Backups explaining the high number of files)

I connect this drive and choose "Open with file manager".
Dolphin starts, then I navigate to the drive in the /media directory, right click it, and click "Properties" :
- First, nothing happens, then Dolphin window turns grey, and 65 seconds after the click, the properties windows appears, with the occupied space bar
- and it takes ... 18 minutes (!!!) to get the detailed count of files. Luckily, there's a "Stop" button ;-)

CPU load : top shows about 5 to 10 % for dolphin, a few for usb-storage, and 4 kio-file processes at 2-3 % each
Gkrellm shows a heavy disk activity, confirmed by the blinking light on the disk.

Same action (mounting, then opening the drive) with konqueror (4.3.5) gives the same results : 65 seconds, and 18 minutes.
(To test this, I have created an "Open with Konqueror" action in KDE configuration, copied from "Open with file manager" - Or something like that, I use a french system)

The system is up to date, last updates from Mandriva repositories applied this morning :
$ uname -a
Linux T160M2010_0 2.6.31.12-desktop-3mnb #1 SMP Thu Mar 25 13:24:09 EDT 2010 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ GNU/Linux
I need this drive with other systems, including multimedia devices, so changing VFAT to another file system is not an option.

Tested the same drive, on the same computer, with Mandriva 2008.1 :
$ uname -a
Linux T160M081.maison 2.6.24.7-desktop586-3mnb #1 SMP Mon Aug 24 16:55:50 EDT 2009 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ GNU/Linux

konqueror 3.5.9 is much faster :
- properties windows opens immediately, with detail count already running
- free space appears 20 seconds later
- the detailed counts take 4 minutes
Note : free space and detail computing are run in parallel.
