Description Juergen Harms 2009-10-15 06:00:16 UTC
Version: dolphin-4.3.2-1mdv2010.0 (using KDE 4.3.2)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Mandriva RPMs

Dolphin pops up - often multiple - kio-thumb_thumbmail password sollicitation windows. That happens when the mouse is moved over the icon of a password protected openoffice file, resp. if the mouse causes enter/leave events on the frame that contains the icons of the directory opened by dolphin.

Sequence to reproduce (100% reproducable)

1. Create a password-protected openoffice file with name <file>)
2. store it in directory with name <dir>
3. open dolphin on directory <dir>
4. move the mouse over the icon of <file>

You obtain a KIO password popup window with a password sollicitation that serves for nothing

5. destroy the kio popup (one of: cancel / window delete button / password key-in)

No more popups will happen when the mouse passes over the icon of <file> until:

6. klick the icon of <file> to open <file> with openoffice

You now get 2 kio popups (which are not needed) + the openoffice (=OO) popup

7. Provide the password for opening <file> to the OO popup, and quit OO again (same result and quicker to test) if you just "Cancel" the OO login)

8. Move the mouse now in and out of the dolphin FRAME that contains the icons of the nodes in <dir>

A new pair of popups appears each time you enter/leave that frame, your desktop becomes a mess (and it is painful to delete all these popups). Since OO will open <file> in a window that partly overlaps the dolphin window, this will happen very frequently as you do your work on <file> and consult or copy/paste in other windows.

Work-arounds:
(a) delete the dolphin window as rapidly as possible after having opened <file> (assuming you dont need that window any more)
(b) use konqueror instead of dolphin

Notes:
- the enter/leave events, that are initially configured on the icon of <file>, appear to be reconfigured on the frame that contains <dir> as soon as <file> is opened
- I do not see any necessity for the kio popups since OO organises its own password input
- in case the kio popups are needed nevertheless, their representation is wrong: they should indicate the name of the file being opened (as it is, you will be in deep trouble if there are 2 protected files with different passwords)
- this bug has been reported as Mandriva bugzilla report #43157.

Using passwords on OO files is quite new and not yet frequently used - so far few user reported this problem. But, password protection of files is a great feature and will become more and more popular - this bug is then extremely annoying

Guesswork when trying to understand what is happening: this bug is probably due to dolphin wanting to do a preview of thefile when the focus traverses the icon of the file, and - since the file is protected - triggers the password solliciation mechanism.

Proof and work-around: turn the right-hand information panel of dophin off (toggle with View -> Panels -> Information ) - once the information panel (the preview appears in the icon frame of this panel) has disappeared, there are no more popups.

Note: there is probably a second dolphin bug: trying to turn off preview by View -> Adjust view properties -> uncheck "Show previews" should have the same effect, but in fact apparently does nothing at all

In the meantime I have opted for a radical solution: ditch KDE and use Gnome - far less intellectually attractive, less nice and pritty - but what a gain in having fewer annoyances!

That means, although I reported the problem, I will not be able to much contribute in the solution.

ODT file protected with “password”, created with LibreOffice 3.6.2.2.

I tested with the attached file, and it works for me.

Yes - this bug appears died of "old age" - I am now using kde 4.9.2 on Mageia, things have improved since 3.6. Thanks!
