Description maarizwan 2001-02-07 15:57:38 UTC
(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: kview
Version: 2.0.1
Severity: normal
Installed from: rh 7.0 rpms

Many legacy KDE applications have been ported to KDE 2.x without much change in user interface. I wonder why some very important KDE applications are not having consistent menus and menu entries? Examples are 1. kview 2. konsole 3. konqueror 4. kpackage 5. kwrite and 6. KghotView to name the important ones...

I would suggest for the following Menus in KDE applications (whenever possible for the sake of consistency):

1.File
2.Edit
3.View
4.Go
5.Format
6.Insert
7.Tools
8.Bookmarks
9.Settings
10.Help

Depending on the above menus I would suggest to re-arrange the KView's menus as follows. I will be giving reasons for that too...

1.File menu: is very nicely arranged. Neat work!

2.Edit menu: getting confusing it should have the following items:

        1.Intensity submenu-> (since we edit the intensity of image.)
        2.Crop / Cut
        3.Copy   (not implemented yet)
        4.Undo   (not implemented yet)
        5.Redo   (not implemented yet)

3. View menu:
        1.Reset (we refresh the view of image not edit it)
        2.FullScreen (View is changed from a window to full screen not edited)
        3.Toolbar (not implemented yet)
        4.Greyscale
        5.Smooth (both 4 & 5 are view related though these are typesof filter)
        6.List... (view image list or List... can be placed in file menu means file list)
        7.Slideshow on/off (view slideshow not images slideshow)
        8.Next
        9.Previous (both 9. and 10 means view next image or view previous image)
       10.Double size
       11.Half size
       12.Max size
       13.Max/aspect  (10 11 12 and 13 are View related items)

4.Image or Picture menu: should have the following submenus (or if you prefer all items with submenus)

        1.Rotate->      ( with items 1. clockwise and 2. anti-clockwise )
        2.Flip->        ( with items 1. Horizontal and 2. Vertical )
        3.To Desktop->  ( with items 1. as Tile 2. as Max and 3. as Maxpect )
        4.Zoom-> ( with items 1. Zoom in 2. Zoom out and 3. Zoom...)

5.Settings menu: which should have Preferences instead of edit menu. Which is a standard menu of many kde applications.

6.Help menu: It should have only three entries:
        1.Contents
        2.What's this? (and)
        3.About KView.

The image menus is very distantly related to View and Edit menu. You tell which sentence makes more sense in the following:

        1.Transform rotate clockwise (or)
        2.Picture / Image rotate clockwise.

No. 2 does sound better and makes more sense. One more logical question

        1.Zoom half size
        2.View half size

likewise

        1.To desktop Desktop Tile (or)
        2.Image/Picture to desktop as tile. (clearly makes more sense than point 1.)

one more...

        1.Edit fullscreen. (are you editing the full screen?)
        2.View fullscreen. (this makes some sense ;)

I like kview and I know that it is one of the great applications KDE has. The confusing Menus make KView rather unfriendly. So please do some little logical changes in the menus for better understanding and consistency with other KDE applications. Thank you.

Yours truly
Rizwaan.

Thanks for your thoughts on this!
One thing you probably didn't take in account is that KDE uses a system of=
=20
Action and Standart Actions. All the Standart Actions are defined systemwid=
e=20
and therefor all the programs that use this should look the same. I did the=
=20
port to KActions in Version 1.9 (KDE 2.1) but so far the ordering didn't=
=20
change very much. But your suggestions have reasons and I reconsidered the=
=20
whole thing (actually it wasn't me who arranged it this way in the first=20
place I just recently took over maintenance).

I made a few comments to you're suggestions but didn't comment on all. I=
=20
will commit my changes as soon as the hard-freeze for KDE 2.2 alpha2 is ove=
r.=20
So it will be in KDE 2.2. Hope it suits you better now.

I don't think so. It at least belongs together with the other filters=20
(Greyscale and Smooth). I'd rather put a submenu filters in edit than=20
splitting this up be not edit it)

Show Toolbar is a StdAction
