Description kYuZz 2009-07-01 02:33:08 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.2)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

It would be nice if plasma's dashboard behaved like Mac OS X dashboard, which you can show or hide just pressing a key.

I find it bothering to have always plenty of plasmoids using my screen estate. I would like to see the dashboard only by pressing a key or a keystroke, like in Mac OS X.

Another reason is that all those plasmoids may be distracting sometimes. I think that it would be more useful to invoke the plasma dashboard by pressing a key, using it to do some task like using the calculator or converting a currency to another, and then hide it again.

The default shortcut is CTRL+F12, but you can customize from system settings.
Comment 2 kYuZz 2009-07-01 15:02:27 UTC
I knew the CTRL+F12 trick already.

What I am trying to point out is that I *DO NOT* want to see any plasmoids on my desktop when using KDE normally, and that I want them to pop up on my screen *ONLY* when I press Ctrl+F12.

Mac OS X's dashboard behaves so.

Instead at the moment I do see plenty of plasmoids on my desktop and the only thing that Ctrl+F12 does, is to put them in foreground, at top of any windows.

can anyone confirm this bug please?

This seems to be a duplicate of this bug:

Comment 5 kYuZz 2009-07-23 11:06:30 UTC
Yes, it is a duplicate of that bug. But I think that this bug explains the problem a little better. so I think that it would make more sense to mark that bug as duplicate of this one.

This is a very useful ability. Screenlets has it as well. You choose in each specific screenlet to behave as widget and then it dissapears from your desktop. Then with F9 you make it visible again. Very useful if yo don't want to fill your desktop with plasmoids. For example I don't need to see the clock and the date all the time. Like this you can have them in the background and with a key combination bring them on just to check the time and date and then with cick or F9 again they dissapear. Very practical.

Is it possible to change the status of this bug to "NEW"?

Isn't this solved by the separate activities for desktop/dashboard that has been in 4.3 for a while? Simply check the box somewhere in system settings (Can't recall precisely where) and set up your desktop to show nothing and your dashboard to show the widgets.

yes, this is solved (since 4.3) with the separate dashboard option which is now in system settings.
Comment 12 Apopas 2010-01-09 00:03:42 UTC
Indeed, it is solved. It could be a bit more obvious though...

"It could be a bit more obvious though"

what do you recommend?
Comment 14 Apopas 2010-01-09 00:33:04 UTC
To be accesible through each plasmoid's settings.
I was looking for it 2 months ago (since I switched to KDE). I couldn't find it. Ok, maybe I'm just dumb, but all the guys I asked told me there wasn't such a feature (probably they weren't aware of it as well coz it's well hidden) :-)

where exactly is the box to check to do this??

click on the desktop cashew --> zoom out --> Configure Plasma --> Use a separate dashboard
Then ctrl-F12 to brign the new dashboard in the front and add your widgets there. It works pretty nice, but it's obviously difficult to find it :)

When using KDE SC 4.4 its under "System Settings > Desktop > Workspace" which I think is obvious enough. I do recall it being somewhat hard to find on 4.3 though.
