Version: (using KDE 4.2.3) OS: Linux Installed from: Slackware Packages Phonon or it's backend to Xine-lib does not support surround sound (only stereo). To test so as follows. Use xine-ui (direct interface to xine-lib) and select "Speaker 4.0" or 5.1 as output. Play a source and it will work (you will have to use xine-ui without loading ANY phonon app otherwise Phonon locks the output and xine-ui will have no sound). After doing this check the xine config file and copy over the speaker-output line to Phonon-xine.xine.conf in .config/kde-org/Phonon... Now logout and login so that Phonon is refreshed. Run Xaffeine or Dragon Player and run a 5.1 source. The application will freeze or "stop" after 2 or 3 seconds. No audio output will be heard. Cause: Phonon is opening the pcm "default" device and ignoring the correct plug:surround40 and plug:surround51 setting. Symptoms: Surround sound in KDE4 is not possible. Other notes: xine-ui and any other app that uses the xine-ui interface will no longer work while phonon has locked the output. A logout & login will cure it.
Is this still valid with KDE SC 4.4.2/Phonon 4.4.0?
Closing for lack of feedback.
