Version: (using Devel) OS: Linux Installed from: Compiled sources Mandriva packages based on 4.1.96; Qt4 4.4.3. I have relatively slow system. Clicking on widget on panel (to open pop up window) I first get black rectangle of the size of pop up window which later is covered by actual contents. Depending on widget it may take some time, but this black rectangle is always visible and makes quite negative impression. I now realized that so far I have seen it only for widgets, not for "normal" application windows. May be this is limited to plasma then.
What graphics card/drivers do you have? Are you using compositing (desktop effects) ? Thanks :)
Created attachment 30074 [details] Xorg.log No compositing (my system is too old for this game :) ). Adapter is Trident Microsystems CyberBlade XPAi1 (this is old notebook); I attach Xorg.log.
As it's a non-composited setup, I don't think we can blame kwin for this. I reassign to plasma as the black background is only shown for plasma widgets, although I fear that they can't do anything as well. I think it's just too old graphics. But Plasma devs should decide.
I'm seeing this with the nv driver, kde 4.2.1, QT 4.5 on 2.6.29 with an NVidia Riva Card. kickoff appears as a filled in all black shape before it actually appears Correctly, For about half a second.
I am seeing the kickoff issue on my system running the nvidia 180.29 driver with an nvidia Gforce 7600GS AGP card.

Does this only happens on Kickoff or any other "rectangle"? (Taskbar popups, Clock Calendar, some other popup) Thanks
This happens - when (re-)starting plasma. I see large black space (like on screenshot) where panels later appear - under left-click pop window on every applet that offers it (I have battery applet and new device notifier) - when icons on tray are re-aligned; I get ugly black stripes between icons before they are repainted again. It does not happen - on right-click menu on applets - when tooltips are shown

I have the same problem. My graphics card is: "ATI Radeon Mobility X300 (M22) 5460 (PCIE)" I am using the radeon driver shipped with opensuse 11.1.
I see this bug also with Qt 4.5 not only with Qt 4.4.3.
I see the same effects with Qt 4.5.1 and kde 4.2.70. as comment #8. (free ati radeon).
Still happening with an updated KDE, Qt and drivers?
As for me - I now have another notebook with nVidia card; using acceleration and kwin effects I do not see this anymore. But as hardware is completely changed it is hard to say whether this is fixed or just hidden.
please reopen this bug if it is still valid with a recent kde / qt version.
Closing for lack of feedback. Please feel free to reopen this report if you can still reproduce this with KDE 4.8.3 or later.
