Description Guillaume Martres 2008-12-05 22:11:27 UTC
Version: (using Devel)
Compiler: gcc 4.3.2
OS: Linux
Installed from: Compiled sources

I've been using KDE 4.1.80 for two days now, and each day after using my desktop for a few hours, I've seen the Xorg process suddenly started using 100% of the CPU and a lot more memory than usual:
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
 5968 root 20 0 986m 650m 2140 R 97 32.7 160:17.28 Xorg
Disablign desktop effects makes it go back to a more reasonable 1% CPU use, but doesn't reduce the memory usage:
 5968 root 20 0 986m 651m 2796 S 1 32.7 162:23.67 Xorg
And reenabling the desktop effects doesn't cause any additional change.
Before my upgrade to 4.1.80, I was using 4.1.3 with desktop effects enabled and no problem like that occured.

Some infos about my setup:
- Kubuntu 8.10
- ATI Radeon HD3450
- Radeon opensource driver, version 1:6.9.0+git20081003.f9826a56-0ubuntu2
- Xorg 7.4, ubuntu packages
- Xserver 1.5.2, ubuntu packages too

Forgot to add, this is using XRender, since the opensource R600 drivers don't have 3D acceleration at the moment.

It happened again today. I'm not completely sure but I think what triggers it is launching an app using krunner. IIRC the first time it was Konqueror, the second time System Settings, and today amsn. It also happened after an uptime of more than 5h and many others app launching using krunner, this time X used all the available memory until kwin disabled desktop effects itself, restarting X was necessary to get my memory back.

This is really old and most likely a driver issue (fglrx, 2008 ...) anyway.
