Description Stefan Neufeind 2008-10-04 21:09:46 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.1.1)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Fedora RPMs

- two screens (left/right)
- using Thunderbird (okay, a GTK-app) - doesn't matter if fullscreen or not

Some windows/popups show always show up on the second screen, though the first one is where the app is running. For Thunderbird I get "new mail"-popups on the second screen or if you try to e.g. create a new IMAP-folder the window where to input the name is on the second screen.

Not sure where this results from and if it is somehow e.g. limited to GTK-apps running under KDE4, but it worked fine under KDE3 :-)

this would be a kwin issue, if it's a kde4 issue at all.

You most likely have "Active mouse screen" or "Active screen follows mouse" enabled and the windows are appearing on the screen that has the mouse cursor. To disable go into System Settings -> Window Behavior and look for the checkbox on the first tab.
Comment 3 Stefan Neufeind 2008-10-05 12:56:36 UTC
no, that's unfortunately not the case. That option is not checked. Also I can also use the mouse on the first screen (in thunderbird) to "create new folder" - and in that case the mouse is clearly on the first screen :-)

Haven't experienced it with many apps yet. Could it be an issue specific to GTK-apps (thunderbird) running under KDE? E.g. that KDE-apps know which part of a twinview is the first and second screen but that to GTK-apps it's reported as "one large screen" or so?
Comment 4 lucas 2008-12-15 09:36:17 UTC
Can you reproduce this using KDE apps or is it really just GTK+ only?
Comment 5 Stefan Neufeind 2008-12-15 09:42:35 UTC
I didn't experience this with other apps than Thunderbird (GTK-app) as far as I remember. So I can't tell. If you've got suggestions I can try out some.

By the way, meanwhile I upgraded to Fedora 10, which now includes 4.1.3-2 and still has the same symptoms for Thunderbird.
Comment 6 lucas 2008-12-15 09:46:59 UTC
Can you try Compiz or Metacity on your current system? Your upgrade from KDE3 might have also upgraded other applications at the same time.
Comment 7 Stefan Neufeind 2009-03-01 17:21:11 UTC
Sorry, but I don't have an easy way to try that out on a production-system. However it seems that for KDE-apps this works fine with TwinView since afaik the Nvidia-driver offers additional info which parts of the (one large) XServer-screen belong to which part of a logical (first/second) screen. It seems that information might not be present or honoured or passed-through for GTK-apps. Could that be a right assumption?

Sorry for the long delay.

Can't reproduce, the imap folder dialog is a modal transient for the main window and thus placed on top of it (therefore naturally on the proper screen)

a) is this still an issue?
b) what are your settings in "kcmshell4 xinerama"?
c) what are your settings in "kcmshell4 kwinoptions" regarding:
   (1st tab)
- focus stealing prevention
- separate screen focus
- active screen follows mouse (i heave read that it was disabled)
  (last tab)
- placement
d) do you have any remotely related window rules configured? (special window/application settings)
e) this /is/ nvidia TwinView or a randr setup - NOT a xinerama or dualhead setup, is it?
Comment 9 Stefan Neufeind 2012-03-15 07:24:24 UTC
I for my part unfortunately can't reproduce this anymore since back around 2009 or so I finally switched to Gnome since KDE 4.0/4.1 (shipped with Fedora) had quite a number of problems back then. I was using nvidia TwinView back then.

So if nobody else experienced this or can reproduce it, I guess we'll need to close this bug.

Thanks for the answer
