When konqueror is opened, instead of the location bar a small black box appears (which I can tell is the location bar because it dissapears/appears when I select it from the toolbar menu).

In the screenshot, I do have KDE4 desktop effects enabled, but I have the same problem, (except the box is moreorless invisible) when desktop effects are off.
I am using the Kubuntu 7.10 packages, and I have installed them ontop of an existing KDE3 install. If it is releveant, my graphics card is an ATI Radeon X600 and I am using the opensource drivers (which are 3D capable).

Do you still see this strange defect in a more recent kde version?

I've never seen it.
