Description Niels van Mourik 2008-01-04 00:52:56 UTC
Version: Revision 756918 of kdebase (using KDE Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources
Compiler: gcc 4.1.3
OS: Linux

Though not a huge problem for myself though probably a logical thing. In System Settings there is no way to change the desktop wallpaper (sure there is a method for this trough plasma itself), this can be considered a regression as KDE4 did had a reference to the KCM plugin in Kcontrol.

Yes, I also think this is a bug, because a lot of people who want to change their wallpaper first look in systemsettings (for example those who used kde 3.5).

Just making the existing desktop settings dialog also appear in systemsettings would probably be the easiest way to do this (probably as an entry in the "Desktop" section). No point making the same thing twice. Actually, it might be worthwhile having various settings dialogs that are currently scattered around be mirrored in systemsettings.

From bug #190540: The whole plasma settings could be integrated in systemsettings avoiding code duplication.

still valid in kde 4.4.4

And you can take it vice versa. There’s no way of changing the screen resolution by right-clicking on the Desktop.
Comment 12 Aaron J. Seigo 2010-08-31 03:08:10 UTC
this will not be implemented since there is no longer the concept, at all, of "the desktop wallpaper". there are background painted on widget layouts in activities, but there can be multiple activities and the management of them is up to the desktop shell. if this were to go into system settings, then it would have to be possible to set any layout in any activity's background, something that is simply not feasible in a usable manner. this is why it is _context sensitive_ and available from the desktop.
Comment 13 Kai Uwe Broulik 2010-08-31 03:10:39 UTC
At least in systemsettings could be a link for opening the background image properties of the current desktop and activity.
As people who search background image properties in systemsettings are likely to don‘t know or care about activites and virtual desktops and just want to set the desktop background THEY SEE.

"could be a link for opening the background image properties of the current desktop and activity."

again, no guarantee that there are background settings for the current activity. it is perfectly allowable for the activity plugin to specifically not support wallpapers.

yes, we could concoct a dbus API and check to see if it exists (so if you aren't running plasma-desktop it doesn't do odd things) and if the current activity supports wallpapers and if it does enable a link/button that then opens the appropriate dialog ...

or people could just use the context sensitive settings.

there are many things that are not in system settings, and that's often a good thing. the vast majority of plasma-desktop settings are context sensitive and therefor not in system settings. it's only the shared settings that appear there.
