Description Matt Sicker 2007-12-28 18:44:11 UTC
Version: 1.2.7 (using KDE KDE 3.5.8)
Installed from:    Ubuntu Packages

There are only a few feeds in the entire internet (so to speak) that I wish to view any sort of images in, while the rest should just not even try. First, some examples of why this is a good idea:

List of news feeds where embedded images actually matter and aren't ads or Feedburner crap:
* xkcd

List of news feeds where embedded images are abused for ads:
* Slashdot
* many others

List of news feeds where embedded images are abused for pointless purposes:
* Every Feedburner feed that enables tags, "OMGZ DIGG THIS!!11!1!11", "Y HELO THAR DELICIOUS LINK", etc.

List of news feeds that _should_ be using embedded images but don't:
* Most webcomics (xkcd is the only exception I can think of)

IMPORTANT PART:
The feature I am requesting here is the ability to globally disable images in feeds and the ability to disable images on a per-feed basis. This would not only be really awesome, but it would also take care of the huge possibility of websites abusing news feeds for ads in the future. This feature can also be extended to include any non-textual elements including Flash, Java, video, audio, etc.

I'd assume that Akregator only uses KHTML and not KJS such that JavaScript-based ads shouldn't be a problem ever, but if that's the case, I can also file a separate wishlist item for this same feature but for JavaScript.

Opera, for instance, allows content blocking (their version of adblock essentially) to take effect in HTML news feeds as well. If Konqueror's AdBlock could be extended for use in any KHTML-based application (particularly Akregator and Ktorrent), this would be even more effective than my original suggestion.

I'd support this too, and it might help with problems I (and I think others) are getting with flash videos.

YES. We want more control over the feeds.
adblocking, trackers and blocking images.

something like this is alredy implemented today with adbloking
(you need to activate adbloking from within konqueror)
