Description Alec 2006-12-26 14:42:43 UTC
Version: 3.4.2 (using KDE 3.4.2 Level "b" , SUSE 10.0)
Compiler: Target: i586-suse-linux
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.13-15.8-default

Pages at the site about.com only print correctly when using Internet Explorer on Windows. Konquerer, Firefox, and Opera on Linux all print the pages incorrectly. A specific url that does not print correctly is
http://southernfood.about.com/od/crockpotbeans/r/cpweekly60.htm
Thanks!

If so *many* other browsers (some of whom known to be better standards compliant then MS IE !) fall on their faces in attempting to print it, it rather looks like the web designer is not fully up to his task (and probably has "optimized for IE" somewhere in his signature).

Also, please hava a look at:

  http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fsouthernfood.about.com%2Fod%2Fcrockpotbeans%2Fr%2Fcpweekly60.htm

to see what I'm talking about....

I looked at the print preview of KDE Konqui 3.5.5 (as shipped for SUSE 10.0 updates), and I can see the top part (reading "About: Southern U.S. Cuisine") that is garbled.

Is it the same for you? Or do you see more problems?

Comment 3 Kurt Pfeifle 2007-01-04 21:22:37 UTC
I've now also used the latest Opera 9.1 release (as can be run via klik://opera91 if you have the klik client installed), and there the same part of the page is garbled (although it looks a bit different than in Konqui).

BTW, for me printing web pages via Opera 9.1 for me usually works wayyyyy better than via IE, because it allows for extremely easy scaling of fonts and pictures in the printout....

Thanks for the response. I sent your link to Customer Service at about.com.

I agree that they're probably only testing their site with IE.

The only time I use IE is as a last resort as I have to borrow someone
else's machine. I've had printing problems with Opera in the past. I
suspect that it is the web site design rather than Opera. Opera perhaps
adheres strictly to standards more so than most browsers? I'll have to
check out the scaling features.
Thanks for your feedback!

Offtopic: Opera can be made to change visible scaling 2 ways:

 (1) scale the web page as it is rendered on screen for normal viewing, but the
printout will not follow that scaling. To scale on screen, use
     [ctrl]+[mousewheel].

 (2) in the print dialog on the "Options" tab, locate the "Scale to print to"
setting (you can type in other than pre-defined numbers as well). Also,
"Fit to paper width" has an influence (depending on the design of the web
     page).
Comment 8 Kurt Pfeifle 2007-01-08 01:32:57 UTC
changed status to "NEW" (though developers may resolve to "WONTFIX")

I've just tried to print that page using konqueror 3.5.9. It seems that the page is printed quite well. Maybe is that website changed?

I agree with Finex, and since there has been no response to whether the page has changed, I'm closing this bug. Please feel free to reopen if you can provide a testcase or a page which still triggers the bug.
