Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.5) Installed from: Ubuntu Packages OS: Linux I have numerous digicam photos of around 100KB apiece (generally 1280x960). I recently ran out of space in my home folder and discovered that the large previews (256x256 max) stored by KDE are almost the same size. For example, I have a 600x1076 image at 76KB with a 142x256 preview at 65KB. In some cases with small images, the thumbnail filesize is actually larger than the original. This might be a limitation of using PNG. Testing in the Gimp shows that with full compression the resized image is indeed 65KB when saved as a PNG. It can be saved as a JPEG with no noticeable loss in quality at as little as 5KB. Also found this entry for the same problem involving PNG thumbnails in the Wikipedia bugzilla: http://bugzilla.wikipedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1218 Thumbnails should be saved with indexed color, or the option of using JPEG or another format should be offered.
