Description Torquil Macdonald Sørensen 2006-04-14 14:57:06 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.2)
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages
OS: Linux

I only see this bug in text view mode. I am using KDE in double click mode.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Click on a folder in the folder tree on the left
2) Mark all files in the folder by making a rectangle around them with the mouse, using the left mouse button
3a) Click and hold the left mouse button on the first file in the folder

Now only the first file is selected, and all other files are deselected. All the files should be selected.

3b) If one clicks and holds on any other file instead, all files but the first are selected.

The second time one tries to do this in the same folder, it works fine.

Best regards,
TMS

When I got to step 3a and I clicked and held the left mouse button, all 35 files (every file in the directory) remained selected.
On step 3b, when I click and hold the left mouse button on any other file than the first one, all files still remain selected.
I would then drag all the selected files to another directory, and the usual menu about copying, moving or linking would come up.

Conclusion: on our system at least, Mouse File Selection seems to behave the way that it is supposed to, and also the way that the Reporter of this bug would probably like it to behave for him. If I understand his report (and I believe that I do,) the way that it behaves for him is a bug. I just can't confirm it here.

This is on Fedora Core 5, fully updated.
KDE is compiled from source (Branch 3.5, fully updated within the last day or so)
Therefore, my KDE version is reported as 3.5.5, and my Konqueror version is 3.5.5 as well.

I forgot to clarify that I did follow all the "Steps to Reproduce" to the letter. The main point of clarification is that I definitely did select the 35 files that I referred to in my original comment by "Making a rectangle around them with the mouse." I definitely did not do "Ctrl | click" or "Shift | click"

I am confirmint this.

I just checked on Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 3 (Taroon Update 9), with Konqueror 3.1.3-5.16 Red Hat (Using KDE 3.1.3-6.12 Red Hat), and it has the same problem.

This is still a problem in KDE3.5.8. I find it really puzzling that not more people are reporting on this very fundamental error. Are there really that few people using the "Text View" mode in Konqueror? I think it is good to have fewer unnecessary icons :-)

Notice that one must not have clicked on any of the files/directories before to trigger this bug. Otherwise it will work fine (just like it works if one tries to select all files/directories a second time in the same directory where the bug was triggered before)

This behaviour is fixed in kde4 trunk 20080507 because it shows a little icon over the file the mouse is over to add or remove it to selection, and it works for me.

I can confirm this bug persists on 3.5.9 but the dolphin details view in trunk r810280 doesn't sport this bug any longer.
