Version: 3.5.1 (using KDE 3.5.1 Level "a" , SUSE 10.0 UNSUPPORTED) Compiler: Target: x86_64-suse-linux OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.13-15.8-default When I type Ctrl in a web page, some little boxes appear above each button, for quick access with the keyboard. It's a nice idea, but there are some usability issues. I don't remember being annoyed by it before, so maybe it's specific to KDE 3.5. The problem is that those quick access keys are activated too fast. For example, I'm in the middle of typing something in a text box: - Then I want to use an ordinary keyboard shortcut, for example Ctrl+A to select that text. - But if I'm a little too slow typing A, Ctrl is already pressed, those quick access keys appear and I end up selecting the button on the page for which "A" is the quick access key... It would be much less awkward to make the quick access keys appear, for example after a half-second press on Ctrl. Or assigning the function to another, less used, key than Ctrl (for example AltGr, or the Menu key on standard 105-key keyboards). I found no way in KControl to change this, so I think it's a usability issue. Thanks for your attention!
It only happens on key-up here. While Ctrl is being held down, they don't show.
It's difficult to "discuss" the way I type on a keyboard... The only thing I can say is that I know how to type properly, and my keyboard is working correctly. Still, regularly quick access keys jump on my screen while I'm typing, so their trigger mechanism is too sensitive. I'm no programer, but I can apply a patch and recompile kdelibs/base. So I'm ready to test any patch you could suggest. Thanks again.
> quick access keys jump on my screen while I'm typing Didn't you turn the sticky keys on accidentally?
No, I didn't. It's only a problem of timing: the quick access key are triggered immediatly after Ctrl is pressed, so I regularly activate something by mistake. May I suggest that Ctrl should be pressed for a short duration for the quick access keys to be activated? Something like half a second, maybe?
Having to press ctrl for some time would make the feature a lot slower for those of us who actually use it. And how would it work with sticky keys?
I know, but it can but really annoying for those who *don't* use it. Ten minutes ago, I again validated a form in the middle of typing it because of those damn quick access keys. Could it at least be made optional?
It is much better in kde4 trunk 20080430, but it makes konqueror use 100% cpu when the ctrl key is pressed more than 1 or seconds in a page with links (such as google).
That's great news. :) Unfortunately I can't test it, since Konqueror 4 is unusable for me (bug #154774). I hope I'll be able to give some feedback soon.
I can't reproduce this issue on trunk r803492 or 3.5.9. It seems that quick keys are only activated on the release of the Ctrl key, so if you press and hold it for a keyboard shortcut, they aren't triggered no matter how long you hold Ctrl down for. I can't see the 100% CPU usage either...
I never questioned the fact that the feature was activated on key release. That seems the most reasonable choice. The problem is that I type very fast, and therefore I sometimes hit Ctrl by mistake. Then I release it, activating the quick key feature by mistake. Unfortunately, the next key I type is taken as quick key instead of normal typing. It's a real problem, for example when I'm filling a form on a web page: it happened dozens of times that the key I type after Ctrl validated or cancelled what I was doing, while I wasn't finished, or followed a random link on the page, etc. That's why I was asking one of two things: either making this feature configurable (and I will disable it), or a pointer to the way I could disable it in the source code and recompile kdelibs.
Thanks for the clarification. In that case, the issue is definitely still present.
Should disable the access keys: kwriteconfig --file khtmlrc --group "Access Keys" --key Enabled --type bool false I think this should be added as configuration option. It's too late to add it to the 3.5.x series, but it would be nice if it was added to KDE 4.
Do you mean that it's already available as a command line but not as a GUI option? A command line is fine for me, I'll test it as soon as I'm back home. Thanks. :-)
I'm going to wishlist this, as it sounds like a feature request at this point
That's OK with me. :-)
It's possible to disable Access keys in KDE 4.x (on the 'Web Browsing' page of the settings dialog). Can we close this report?
