Description Shriramana Sharma 2005-10-24 04:41:03 UTC
Version: 1.42 (using KDE KDE 3.4.3)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

In the interests of enhanced intercompatibility with other OSs and non-KDE applications, I suggest that we do not use the KOffice file formats for saving any more in favour of the OASIS OpenDocument format.

OOo is available for all non-*nix platforms and non-KDE, whereas KOffice is only available for *nixes and KDE. (Maybe you can run KOffice under GNOME or other wm-s, I donno, but still you will have to do some circus to accomplish that, I think.)

So if we completely switch over the default document type used (for saving) by KOffice to OpenDocument then we accomplish all this. There are too many file formats out there, and there's not much point in too much forking. Whatever KOffice developers may seek to improve in the document format, they can always contribute to the OpenDocument format, thereby benefiting a greater base of users.

Of course, KOffice should still be able to read and write the current version of the KOffice file format, but this should be relegated to non-default status. ODF should be made default for saving.

I say this in the interests of making KOffice attractive to an even greater userbase.

Yes, going using OpenDocument for the KOffice applications that support it is planned for 1.5 already, so don't worry, and no, you don't need to do any circus to run KOffice under any X11 environment -- it just works, even with the X11 of OS X. I wish people would learn that there's nothing stopping them from running a KDE application under Gnome or a Gnome application under KDE. Any perceived difficulties are imaginary.

Hello and thanks for assuring me that this will be done by 1.5, and also for the explanation of KDE/GNOME app interoperability. (The latter stems from random memories of posts on mailing lists saying that a GNOME app didn't work on KDE or vice-versa.)

Now can you please tell me where I can see the roadmap for 1.5? Thank you.
