Version: 3.4.0 (using KDE 3.4.0, Debian Package 4:3.4.0-0ubuntu3.4 (3.1)) Compiler: gcc version 3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-8ubuntu2) OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.10-5-686 On my Desktop i have a folder that was once named "collect". I right-clicked on it and changed the name to "MP3 files". The latter is now the name displayed under the icon. But when i click the folder, the name in the path is "Desktop/collect". Also, when i click the properties dialog, i can see the name is still "collect". On the console, the name is also "collect". How did it happen?
Can you reproduce this problem with KDE 3.5?
Hi Philip, i am now using KDE version 3.5.2. I did the following: 1. Right-click on the icon labelled "collect". (The actual directory, checked with "ls" in the konsole, is named "collect".) 2. Chose "Properties" from the right-click menu. 3. Change the name to "MP3", confirmed and closed the dialog. Effect: The label of the desktop icon did not change! Also to redraw the desktop did not help. But when i look with "ls" in konsole, the name of the directory became "MP3". This is mind-boggling. On the contrary, when i 1. select the icon and 2. press F2 to change the name directly, the name on the desktop changes, but not the actual directory. These problems occur with with all folders i keep on the Desktop. It really needs to be fixed!
Can't reproduce this sorry. Is there some other condition that needs to be fulfilled?
This happens if you have a .directory desktop file inside the directory. The file is created e.g. when you assign a special Icon for the directory. Then this file also contains a Name=XXX property which is what you see on the desktop, but the dir itself still has it's old name. Check if there is one and if so, simply remove it, then you will have no more troubles. (Checked with KDE-3.5.5) If this solves your troubles, please close this report.
Many many thanks Martin Koller, the .directory file is the source of the trouble! But i think it would be not right to close this bug, since it remains a usability bug. When "What you see is what you get" is not even true for file names anymore, this is "WTW", "worse than Windows" :) To assign an icon for the directory (i did this) should have no effect on chaning the name of the directory. This is absolutely not logical. I strongly suggest to find a solution for naming files on the Desktop that is consistent with the file system. In general i do not understand why the Desktop is treated different from other "folders", or why folders do not have the same features as the Desktop (e.g. saving the position of an icon). Best greetings!
Cannot reproduce on KDE 3.5.9 and 4.1 (trunk r802881). The bug seems fixed.
I am unable to reproduce this in 3.5.9 and trunk (r807429). I think this is because the Name= tag seems to be ignored.
So could we close this report?
