Description Till 2005-03-30 14:14:28 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.4.0)

in KAdressbook there is a "formatted name" for all contacts. In my
current .vcf file this is "Simple name" for most of the contacts. But
new contacts are created with "Reverse Name with Comma" (btw: why do
all these words start with capital letters?). That's fine, because I
would rather like to have all my contacts with a "formatted name" converted to "Reverse Name with Comma" because I like it much better than the "Simple Name" formatting.

In Perl this would be a one-liner... I don't know much about Qt, but I don't think it would be hard to implement.

I think it would come handy to have the ability to change the way the name of a contact is stored on a case by case basis. That is, if the default formatted name doesn't match one's wish for a particular contact, one may reverse the order, add some special mark or whatever. It would be also useful to be able to change the formatted name once it has been entered and saved. It seems not to be possible (with the older version I am using).

In a word, make the formatted name entry editable and automatically filled up according to the default. One may then change it if needed.
Thank you.

PS: I don't think it is usefull to add an extra function to remove all or a substantial bunch of contact. It would be rarely used and one could edit the file by hand (or with a special script) to do that if it is once needed. Don't clutter the programme with dubious function which will make it even more difficult to use.

I don't think adding an extra field to manually change the formatted name is necessary. But if you want to do it, go ahead. It won't irritate me.
But: My initial idea was to keep the formatted name field in some way consistent.
My idea would be to simply add a "Do you want to change the formatted names for you current contacts?" question, when the user changes the setting in KAddressbook's configuration dialogue.

Thanks for your reaction.
Consistency is not bad but actually I don't see any use of this name for sorting purpose or the like. On the left panel, it doesn't appear and one can order the contact entries by family or first name. So my idea is to be able to enter something meaningful _and_ to be able to change it.

Actually, I have now found out how to change the formatted name (through "Edit Name"). So it's all fine for me now.

I don't think the function you'd like to be implemented is so useful because the formatted name can contain a prefix or a suffix (for ex. Prof. John D. Smith III) which is nice to have printed in the address panel below but which isn't present for all contacts.

Moreover as this string should be also used for e-mailing, I don't think it is useless at all.

Is this still an issue for you, Till? If not, please close the report. Thanks.

Hi, well implementing a dialog which asks you if you want to convert all contacts to a certain format (as mentioned in #2) would be usefull. I often import vCards, however kadressbook does not seem to care about the default name format so far (3.5.7) when importing a vCard. So if there was an option to convert all contacts to a certain format it would save me some work...

Cheers

Phil

The development of the old KAddressBook will be discontinued for KDE 4.4.
Since the new application has the same name, but a completly new code base we close all bug reports against the old version and ask the submitters to resend there reports against the new product.
