Description Christopher E. Granade 2004-08-11 05:19:55 UTC
Version: 3.2.1 (using KDE KDE 3.2.3)
Installed from: RedHat RPMs

Whereas there are many non-KDE applications out there that consume addressbook info (aka, Mozilla Thunderbird), and whereas the goal of Kontact and other KDE apps should not be to actively exclude non-KDE apps, but to scale gracefully, I suggest that there be included with the KDE PIM solution a plugin for KAddressBook that creates an LDAP server with the PIM data as the backend. Thus, non-KDE apps such as Thunderbird could subscribe to the LDAP directory served by KAddressBook.

Implement an LDAP server in KDE? Why not store PIM data in an existing LDAP server, and use the LDAP resource?

Partially because of the intimidation factor. As for myself, I'm an LDAP noob, and I couldn't figure out OpenLDAP enough to set up a desktop repository that would allow me to sync KAddressBook w/ Mozilla Thunderbird. For those like me who are new to LDAP, or don't even know what it is, it might be very helpful to have seamless integration between KDE and personal-level LDAP.

Why do you use both Kmail and Mozilla Thunderbird in the same computer?
If you want to change Kmail for using Mozilla you export/import the contacts and mails. What is the problem?
