Preview pane does not show message content

Description Erno Szabados 2004-04-25 15:39:36 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.0)
Installed from: Slackware Packages

Until recently kmail worked for me flawlessly. Recently without any change to the system it fails to display the content of my e-mails.
The list of emails appear correctly but when I select an email, its content does not appear (as it did before), rather a blank grey (empty) area appears. Furthermore when I double click on any email to view email contents a blank window pops up with only four icons visible (printing, re, re all, insert) Selecting - for example - insert icon here, a re window appears and the email content gets inserted, so the content is there.

I know its not wery much to help further to solve this error, but if you need any further information please contact me and I try to provide it.

I guess its rather my (now) braindead Slackware installation, after a KDE reinstallation all went away.

This bug reappeared after a clean install (Slack 10). I have got no idea what could be the reason, but in kmailrc, in the [Reader] section, the MessagePanelHeight value got zero, and so the message content area was invisible.

Here is a workaround if this bug hits you:
Set the panel value (for example) to 80 by editing the rcfile and message content is shown.

Note: I did not hide the message content before, I guess it losts its value somehow.

I use KMail 1.7.1 on KDE 3.3.0 from the SUSE 9.2 release. I used it with no probs for several weeks and then today the message preview panel disappeared after boot up when I opened it by clicking its button on the panel. (KMail's button was on the panel as always because I never close it down.)

I am sure I took no action to change it's behaviour, although I do have an idea that I may have brushed the bottom of the KMail window with the mouse, but not sure.

The main problem is that once the "config" change has happened, whatever I do in "Configure KMail" on the Settings menu, makes no difference. Adding or removing the "HTML Status Bar", "Message Structure Viewer" or "Message Preview Pane" has no effect and none of them ever appears.

I solved it by finding the 80309 report and editing kmailrc entry "MessagePaneHeight" which was set to 0. I made it 90 and all is OK. But surely if the parameter is set to 0 in error or for whatever other reason, the use of Settings should enable recovery.

Keep up the good work. I'm 63 and never enjoyed learning so much!!

The same happened to me last sunday (Sept 11), I suspect as a result of an online update (Suse 9.2).

Exactly the same thing happened to me last week. The Message preview pane showed message content before, then all of a sudden the message preview pane does not display the message content anymore.

I have to do a "View Source" from the "View" Menu to read the emails, or save the content to disk and open them up in the browser.

The Message Preview pane does not show message content any more. Happened all
of a sudden by itself.

with svn r881888 this bug is no longer reproducible. (bugday 09 november 2008)
Comment 10 Michael Leupold 2008-11-09 11:50:19 UTC
Can't reproduce either on trunk r881868. Even setting the pane size to 0 in the config doesn't make it disappear. The pane also has a minimum size now.
