Description M.Hilpert 2004-03-31 20:48:37 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.1)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

After i upgraded from KDE 3.1.4 to 3.2.0, i noticed freezes of the complete system every few minutes (even switching to a terminal doesn't work anymore - only a hard reset of the computer works). so i upgraded to KDE 3.2.1, installed all base packages and some applications/internationalization. After restart, the login screen appears. But when i try to login (no matter what window manager or "safe settings"), the screen turns black for a second (as if KDE begins to start) and ... the login screen reappears! in the message box below it says:

kdm_greet[1355]: Can't open default user face

If i switch to a terminal, i can "init 3", switch to my user and "startx" and KDE starts up correctly (of course without login screen). however, the freezes are still there.

what can i do to get the login screen (kdm?) back working? it's very frustrating that the linux desktop is getting more and more unstable and i have to do such things as "init 3; su user1; startx" ... any additional package that i need to install?

wrong bug allocation...
but luckily i had the same login problem.
solution was posted in the suse mailing lists,
here the short version:

I solved the problem by deleting  the following files/dirs in /home/jdoe:
/.fonts
/.kde
/.mcop
/.qt
/.skel
.ICEauthority
.Xauthority
.dmrc
.mcoprc

But before deleting, save your .kde dir to a save place so that you can
copy back carefully some selected config files (kmail, korganizer, etc)
afterwards.

Udo
