Description Paul Hoepfner-Homme 2004-02-09 21:14:06 UTC
Version: 2.0 (using KDE KDE 3.2.0)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
Compiler: gcc (GCC) 3.2.3 20030422 (Gentoo Linux 1.4 3.2.3-r1, propolice)
OS: Linux

I hope I'm associating this bug with the right program (khotkeys). I'm not sure because in the KHotKeys configuration module there's no mention of this new feature of KDE 3.2, which I'll describe:

Since upgrading to KDE 3.2, my keyboard's "mute" and "volume" keys now cause a big box in the middle of my screen to appear telling me my sound card's mixer settings are being adjusted correspondingly. But I've always associated program shortcuts with my keyboard's multimedia keys through KMenuEditor, and now those associations are ignored. Instead, I am forced to adjust my volume when I press the volume keys and mute my sound card when I hit mute - which I don't want.

It was working fine in KDE 3.1.5 - I associated programs I use very frequently with my mute and volume keys (I rarely need to alter volume settings via my keyboard, so I prefer not to use those keys for that purpose).

I've looked everywhere in the KDE control center screens to find out where I can turn off this automatic volume control box that pops up, to no avail. I figured it would be in the KHotKeys control center module, but there is no mention of any mixer-related shortcuts there.

Can this behaviour not be overridden?

It's KMilo from kdeutils what has the multimedia keys associated. You can turn it off in Settings/KDE components/Services manager (or whatever are the exact English names).
I'll leave this bugreport open as this issue should be solved somehow.
