Description Edward Muller 2004-02-08 08:11:24 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.0)
Installed from: RedHat RPMs
OS: Linux

Go into control center -> Sound & Multimedia -> System Notifications.
Select 'KDE System Notifications'. Choose any notification that is supposed to play a sound, such as 'A critical message is being shown'.

Click the |> button between the text 'Play a sound:' and the filename.

Nothing happens.

When I change the 'Player settings' and specify artsplay as the player the sounds start working.

Note: I had to re-compile arts to get artsd not to segfault.

I also had a problem with no sound from the notifications even when sound was turned on in Control Center. The problem turned out to be that in the knotifyrc configuration file, "Arts Init" and "Use Arts" had been set to false rather than to true. That apparently was an artifact of the transition from KDE 3.1.4 to KDE 3.2.

blowing away ~/.kde did the trick wrt the sound config. I know I didn't need to blow it away but I wanted to make sure no other old settings were having an effect on another bug I'm having.
