Description Cédric Brégardis 2004-01-26 21:24:01 UTC
Version: 2.95 (using KDE KDE 3.2.0)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
Compiler: 2.95.3 20010315
OS: Linux

With xawdecode 1.8.2 (a tv application), when switching to fullscreen, the window take all the screen, but resolution is not change like it did with kwin 0.95 from kde 3.1. Xawdecode is configured to swicth to 800x600, and XFree is Ok. Furthermore, the screensaver was previously desactivated, and now, it is not. It works perfectly with kde 3.1, but not with kde 3.2-rc1 so I think it is a kwin bug. If I only start X with an xterm, without any window manager and I start kwin from kde 3.1 (0.95) it works. If I start kwin from kde 3.2-rc1, it doesn't work.

But I must say that I can switch to fullscreen with some games.

confirmed with a few days old HEAD.. guess it's not NETWM compliant.

Is it possible to reproduce the problem without a TV card?

Subject: Re: Xawdecode fullscreen under this version does'nt work while it did with kde 3.1

I can run xawdecode and reproduce the bug if I unload all tv related modules
(bttv, v4l...). Of course I have no tv and only a black screen. So I think
you can reproduce the bug without tv card.

It seems that the bug is not resolved : I have install kde 3.2.0, and the problem is still here. Then I have installed kwin (and only kwin) from current CVS, and I have the same problem.

I have also seen another bug with xawdecode (not in fullscreen this time) and kwin : when using 'overlay', when I move the window, the image is not moved. And after that, when I close the window xawdecode is closed but the last image (the one whish was not in its window) is still here, and I have to move another window on it to "paint" the backgound.

With kde 3.1 it worked.

The problem that I have reported in my last comment (window moving in overlay) is resolved in the last CVS version. But the fullscreen problem is still here.

Works for me (no TV card). What should be the problem exactly?
Comment 8 Cédric Brégardis 2004-02-16 19:17:51 UTC
When I ask to xawdecode to go fullscreen, the window indeed take all the
screen, without titlebar. It's ok. But Xawdecode is configured to change the
resoultion : my desktop resolution is 1024x768, and xawdecode fullscreen
should be 800x600. The problem is here : the resolution is not changed. It is
important to be able to change resolution. I will not expose the subject
here, but for exemple in overlay the image can't be stretch. Then the tv
image doesn't take all the screen : there are big black borders.

The other point is that while Xawdecode is in fullscreen, screensaver should
be disabled. Now, with this fullscreen-without-resolution-change, screensaver
is still present.

For information, to change resoultion in xawdecode, I have this line in
~/.xawdecode/xawdecoderc :
fullscreen = 800 x 600

And when I say "screensaver", I mean screensaver from EnergyStar, I don't have
software screensaver.

Cédric.

I suggest you report this to xawdecode developers. It's xawdecode who should be disabling the screensaver, so if it doesn't do it, it's probably its fault. Also resolution changing is up to the application (and I don't think _NET_WM_STATE_FULLSCREEN should be used in this case).
The fact that this worked with KDE3.1 (which didn't have NETWM support for fullscreen) is irrelevant for KWin, as long as it's not proven the bug is not in the application.
Comment 10 Cédric Brégardis 2004-02-22 12:25:04 UTC
Indeed, it's a Xawdecode bug : it does'nt have the same behaviour if the wm is
NETWM or not.
