Version:           2.3.2 (using KDE 3.1.9)
Compiler:          gcc version 3.3.1 20030728 (Debian prerelease)
OS:          Linux (i686) release 2.4.19-xfs

Even enabling the Tag Reader plugin in Noatun and selecting Load Tags Automatically, Noatun never loads the tag information for mp3 or ogg.

Using the Lucky Tag Reader works, but it's not a solution.

Sure it does -- you most likely just don't have the KFileMetaInfo plugins for mp3 and Ogg installed.  Can you see if you can find i.e. kfile_mp3.so on your system?
