(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: kmail
Version: KDE 2.2.2
Severity: wishlist
Installed from: RedHat RPMs
Compiler: Not Specified
OS: Linux
OS/Compiler notes: Not Specified

The current "Search messages" tool does not enable users to search messages based on the message status.

The most useful and wanted feature is a search for Flagged messages. This would provide an excellent way of flagging for instance Todo tasks in mail and quickly listing these out.

The perfect implementation would allow to setup a folder which dynamically listed all the messages that are currently flagged although this is a much more complex solution and possibly less doable than simply adding options to "Search messages".

I can confirm that this is a useful wish.
(I would have submitted it, too if it wasn't there already.)
Comment 2 denis 2003-03-12 18:12:22 UTC
I will comment again, to clarify what I specifically am looking for.

If I could search for messages marked as "Important", scope being selectable of course, and
have a nice resulting list of important (possibly unanswered) messages, the actual flagging of
such messages would be a lot more useful.

The proposed ideal "virtual folder thingie" is a big plus, but not important if only searching for
flags worked.

Note that it is already possible to sort by status.
(Click on the "sender" a couple of times until you get the right sorting.)

Searching on flags is so important because you can combine it
with other criteria.

The more flags are supported, the better.
(e.g. important, answered, encrypted, signed ....)
Comment 4 denis 2003-03-12 18:34:54 UTC
Well, sorting on status is of limited use because the messages are often scattered through the
hierarchy (of a well organized mailbox :) ..

So I agree, I need to be able to combine it with searching through a number of folders and
subfolders, along with combining other criteria of course.

Unfortunately, the "flag" is multi-purpose and rather transient it seems -- for instance, if
you mark a message as "important" and then forward/reply to it, the "flag" changes to
the last action taken and thus looses it's importance.

As to sorting, I remember this as a "nice" feature of outlook in that the flags
(read/unread status), importance, & attachment indicators were seperate columns,
thus they could be selected for sorting (as well as moved to different positions, or
removed entirely -- after all, what is the point of a seperate read/unread indicator when
the subject line text is BOLD for unread messages in the first place?)

Comment 6 denis 2003-03-12 18:50:04 UTC
Actually the part about them being transient is not particularily problematic in my case, as
whenever I answer the mails I have usually completed what made me tag it as important in the
first place..

Since KDE 3.2 you can search by status and you can create a search folder which will be dynamically updated. Furthermore even Tom's problem is resolved because now a message can have multiple status (e.g. important and answered).
