If you highlight a file in the "files" tab, pressing the delete key in the R console window results in you deleting the file, not deleting the character in the R console window.

This behaviour persists even if the files tab is closed. 

That means the delete key does not work in the R console window \(really annoying\) and you risk deleting files while typing code in the console window.
