On KDE 4.2.90, the icons in the Quicklaunch applet have no visual feedback. In previous versions, they lit up when moused over. It also appears that they should get smaller when clicked, as occurs with independent icons and the K menu icon.

thank you for the patch; a slightly modified version of it has been committed to svn today so it can be part of 4.3

even though this does not work for me in 4.3 it does in trunk, so this can be marked as closed.
