kde 4.1 worked fine until I installed  XEN. thereafter I could not start. I installed opensuse 11.1 with KDE4.1 for the second time, it would still not start. I installed 11.1 a third time ,now with KDE3.5, no problems whatsoever.

It seems you're having packaging related problem. Try using a new clean user account.
