If one adds the Quick Access plasmoid to the desktop its default size is too
small which results in the "grey dot thinghy" getting drawn instead of the
correct icon.

As soon as one resizes / enlarges the icon it works just fine.

quickaccess is a third party add-on. you can find them on kde-look.org, contact them.
