Version:           1.9.52 (using 4.1.00 (KDE 4.0.99 (4.1 RC1+)) "release 5", openSUSE 11.0.42 (X86-64))
Compiler:          gcc
OS:                Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.25.5-1.1-default

First installation of kmail on a newly installed Linux. 
No prior configuration files on the (new) drive.

During account setup I was attempting to change the default parent directory for the mail folders.

The crash occurred immediately following my search for a new directory. (Realising that there was no way to achieve such a change).

Update your KMail version.
