Description Joseph Tate 2008-07-17 18:52:04 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.98)
Installed from: Unlisted Binary Package
Compiler: gcc 4.1.2
OS: Linux

I'm using KVM on Linux 2.6.25.10 x86_64 both for the host and the guest. I've tried both -std-vga and without for kvm's options.

When I log into KDE 4.1rc1, plasma starts, but only fills 3/4ths of the horizontal space on the display. It's like every 4th pixel gets dropped (which causes a kind of pin-striping effect). Then, when kde starts to launch my session applications, X crashes, and I get kicked back to kdm.

I've isolated this by running a failsafe login, then launching plasma manually (same squished screen). Plasma starts up, and I can use the menu, etc. (Though it looks like all the widgets have the same squished effect). Then, if I launch klipper or korgac or something that tries to draw to the applet area, X crashes, and I'm back to kdm. Interestingly, the failsafe window doesn't get squished, and kwin's window borders appear normal.

I will attach a screenshot that illustrates the pin-striping.

this is a bug in the x implementation: it says it supports argb visuals of a certain colour depth, but doesn't.

upstream issue.
