Description Ambroz Bizjak 2008-06-24 15:58:04 UTC
Version: (using Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources
Compiler: gcc (GCC) 4.1.2 (Gentoo 4.1.2 p1.0.2)
OS: Linux

When I choose Leave->Logout in the menu, the logout dialog shows up, however the background shows garbage. Only a small part of the background on the top of the screen which gets black and-white as supposed is displayed correctly. The rest of the background is a black-and-white image that seems to have been produced by combining random parts of my current screen and even parts of the screen in the past, and it changes only slightly during the darkening time.

This does not happen if compositing is enabled.
Graphics card is Nvidia 8800 GTX with driver version 173.14.09.
Comment 1 Tim Beaulen 2008-06-24 19:06:41 UTC
I can confirm the broken background when logging out and when not in compositing mode.

I also have an NVidia graphics card with driver 173.14.09

Doesn't appear to be an NVidia problem, I've seen this too every now and then, using Xephyr.
Comment 3 A. Spehr 2008-07-02 10:42:09 UTC
Fredrik said this has something to do with video memory. I have nVidia, r826995. Confirming.

duplicate of #165251?

I think there is a similar issue on login from kdm.

In the moment between I press ENTER in kdm to login, and the moment when the KDE splashscreen starts, I see also a corrupted background on the screen.

I use KDE 4.0.84 from Debian experimental
Comment 5 Clas Rurik 2008-07-08 01:48:45 UTC
I only get this using the option InitialPixmapPlacement=2 (afaik this is responsible to place pixmaps directly into video memory) and without compositing enabled.
Otherwise the screen is just black.
Sometimes I see the small part on top of the screen as mentioned before.

(NVIDIA 8600M GT, 173.14.09, kde compiled from svn)
