Description Maciej Pilichowski 2008-06-14 12:05:17 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.82)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

Simply way to get bitten:
a) add panel at the top
b) move at the top, choose "remove panel"
c) confirmation dialog will appear at the center of the screen

(b) -> (c), useless moving, it could be shown where the cursor already is

there has been a huge amount of discussion between the kwin hackers and the plasma hackers on these issues and we finally have some agreement on which dialogs should specially positioned like this, and which not.

it's a bit of a compromise at this point, but it's workable and agreed to.

so this isn't something that will get changed, i'm afraid. it *could*, and i *could* keep this report open ... but i feel i'd be lieing to you by doing so.

Aaron, I hope you realize what you do to older people, people with even mild disabilities.

Those people already suffer from moving their hands, and forcing them to just move the mouse is like chasing a ghost -- I am here, no I am there, please, click me, I am now there, etc.

My intention is: give people some rest, respect them.

From technical point of view I can only see one reason, to have their attention, but this is quite contrary -- (I can tell, because I teach) people usually are _focused_, and they "are" in place of mouse cursor, if you show them something out of that place it takes ages, they realize computer answered.

I hope you, and other developers reconsider this issue -- not everybody is young & healthy.

Or maybe an option in SS for that? It would be relief.

Thank you in advance.

Perhaps a collection of usability problems with plasma would be nice? That list could then be revisitied at some point, perhaps kde 4.2 or something like that
Comment 4 Lubos Lunak 2008-06-16 10:43:22 UTC
The dialog is presumably just missing the panel as its parent, so that KWin doesn't know they belong together.

that doesn't get it to where the cursor is, lubos. it gets it next to the window, but the cursor is actually just as far away as it was when it was in the center of the window, at least with the default 100% width panel.

Why it is a wontfix exactly?

What is the aim of KDE UI? To cause RSI? I simply don't get it -- I observe (for years) how users react and where they look, if this is a wontfix KDE will be less useful than it could be.

Other operating systems (or drivers exactly) already addressed this issue (but in a wrong way), so there could be a chance to beat them.

Changing summary for comment #4.

Comment #6: KWin can show any windows at the mouse position. E.g. for all dialogs, Alt+F3/Configure/Window-specific -> New, enable only Dialog window type, enable Placement policy and force it to the mouse one.
Comment 8 Maciej Pilichowski 2008-06-19 14:41:50 UTC
LUBOS! THANK YOU! :-)

Oh man, this works just great! This really should be set by default (it is easier to delete it if not wanted).
Comment 9 Aaron J. Seigo 2008-06-23 00:47:55 UTC
thank you for re-opening the bug twice now. since you've reopened it, please feel free to actually fix it. or maybe see what's in trunk/ right now. i don't know. but this is about as stupid as an svn revert party.
Comment 10 Lubos Lunak 2008-06-23 10:47:47 UTC
It was apparently too much work to just say it's been already fixed.
