It would be cool if digikam would allow a picLens-like view on albums. Makes finding pictures easier and faster.

But it's really suitable with a amount of pictures (100000 items for ex.) ?

Yes, looks nice, but that's it.
I don't know if I would any images at all with that. It's hard enough with an album displaying 5000 images in recursive mode with the current thumbnail view.

For me this is just eye-candy, but eye-candy with a lot of programming effort.

It just a toy view, but a nice toy, using OpenGL i think...

What's the complexity to implement a widget like this ?

The transition between image is nice. It opengl is not necessary, why not to try to implement it for preview mode ?
