When kmail is configured for access to an IMAP server it set as unread all the emails in the folders.
Kmail should read the status (read/unread) directly from the IMAP server.

SVN commit 762003 by tilladam:

Tiny porting bug, annoying consequences. Opening a folder for the first time
no longer marks all mails in it unread.

Hi! You have fixed partially the bug:
The emails are not setted to unread (OK)
The mail folder is still showing the number of "unread mail" that is untrue.

I'll attach a screenshot.

On this screenshot  you will see that the mail counter on the list is counting
some unread emails, but the mails are all read.

Hello! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this version of Kmail has been unmaintained for many years so I am closing this bug. Please try using the latest version of Kmail to see if your issue persists. If it does, please submit a new bug in "kmail2". Thank you!
