I know about #44699. Basically, it says KMail won't let you send encrypted mail to people you don't trust.

The problem is that there is no intuitive error message to let you know about this problem when you encounter it. When I try to send an encrypted mail to someone I don't trust, I get an error message saying

"There are conflicting encryption preferences for these recipients. Encrypt this message?"

Now I'm wondering which conflicts this is about. Anyway, I click "Encrypt".

I then arrive at the "Encryption Key Selection" dialog saying that no trusted key was found for this recipient. That's right, I didn't set the trust level for this key. After all, I received it by email, so it might have been hacked. But I want to use it anyway, so I select it in the dialog. But when I click the key, a red X appears next to it and I can't click the OK button.

The user should know about the fact that the key must be trusted.

I can't reproduce using KMail 1.11.0. On sending an encrypted mail to someone I don't trust I get a dialog saying:
"One ore more of your configured OpenPGP encryption keys or S/MIME certificates is not fully trusted for encryption. The following keys or certificates have unknown trust level: <mailaddress>" (mailaddress is obviously the one I'm trying to send to).
The following key selection dialog doesn't bug me about it.

So I assume this must have been fixed.

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report.

KMail2 was released in 2011, and the entire code base went through significant changes. We are currently in the process of porting to Qt5 and KF5. It is unlikely that these bugs are still valid in KMail2.

We welcome you to try out KMail 2 with the KDE 4.14 release and give your feedback.
